Keeping your eyes healthy and protected while travelling

Traveling is an exciting time, exploring new places, cultures, and experiences. But while you're busy taking in the sights, it’s easy to forget that your eyes need a bit of care too. Whether you're trekking through dusty landscapes, spending hours on a plane, or lounging on a sunny beach, your eyes are constantly exposed to elements that can cause strain or damage. Here are simple, effective tips to keep your eyes healthy and protected while travelling.

1. Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses-Ultraviolet (UV) rays can harm your eyes just like they can damage your skin. Long-term exposure can increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and some cancers. Always pack a good pair of sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. If you’re heading to snowy or high-altitude areas, polarized lenses can reduce glare, providing better visual comfort in those harsher conditions.

2. Use Lubricating Eye Drops-Airplane cabins, hotel rooms with air conditioning, and dry climates can all cause dry eyes. Carry a small bottle of preservative-free lubricating eye drops to soothe irritation and keep your eyes comfortable. If you wear contact lenses, consider switching to glasses during long travel days to avoid dryness and discomfort.

3. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule-If you're staring at a screen during flights, train rides, or downtime at your accommodation, remember the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 meters away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce digital eye strain and gives your eyes a break from constant focus.

4. Protect Against Dust and Allergens-Travelling to windy or dusty locations? Carry wrap-around sunglasses or goggles to shield your eyes. If you’re prone to allergies, go prepared with antihistamine eye drops and avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen irritation.

5. Stay Hydrated and Rested-Dehydration can contribute to dry eyes, so drink plenty of water, especially on flights. Also, lack of sleep can lead to red, puffy eyes and blurry vision. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule and give your eyes the rest they need. Taking care of your eyes while travelling doesn’t require much effort, it just takes a bit of planning.
