FAQ #78: Will Wearing Glasses Weaken My Eyes?
How do glasses work? Well, refractive errors occur when your eye can’t focus light correctly on the retina, causing blurry vision. The common types are: Myopia (near-sightedness): Difficulty seeing distant objects, Hyperopia(far-sightedness): Difficulty seeing close objects, Astigmatism: Blurry vision at all distances due to an irregular cornea or lens, Presbyopia: Age-related difficulty focusing on close objects. Spectacle lenses correct these refractive errors by bending light rays to focus correctly on your retina, providing clear vision. They do they weaken your vision, they enhance it. Without glasses, your eyes work harder to focus, leading to headaches and fatigue. We want to reduce strain and keep your eyes comfortable. Wearing glasses that are customized especially for you, is the best way to do so. And let’s not forget the young ones! Uncorrected vision in children can lead to serious issues like learning difficulties or even permanent vision loss. Glasses help ensure their eyes develop properly. Some common concerns we hear at are, “my new glasses feel too strong” and, “I feel too dependent on my glasses” or, “my prescription keeps changing. Are my eyes getting weaker?” It’s important to remember, it can take a few weeks for your eyes and brain to adjust to a new prescription. Wear your glasses regularly, and if issues persist, let us know! And not to worry, glasses don’t cause dependency. Once you’re used to seeing clearly, your uncorrected vision might seem worse in comparison, but that’s just because you’re appreciating the clarity your glasses are providing! Natural aging and associated changes to the eye’s anatomy will mean that most people will require changes to their prescription over time. This progression is normal and expected, and would happen regardless of whether you wear your glasses, or not. Get in touch with the team at Blur Eyecare for an up-to-date eye exam.
